The Science of Living starts from knowing and controlling oneself. Management education seems to be incapable of developing well–rounded individuals competent of handling paradoxes, conflicts and grey waters of global business. Present era has pushed individuals to modern values based on materialism and hence starting a rat race behind money and success. Present management education is too much based on analytical intelligence.

In reality managers require a strong link between managing business, ethical and personal issues. The workshop stressed the importance of the nature of self-development and manager’s consonance with his purpose of being. It also focussed on the manager's own role and responsibility at multiple levels in becoming a powerful agent of social change and transformation.

Life on this earth is an instrument to achieve the manifestation of the supramental truth. For achieving perfect coordination of physical, vital and mental life it is important to follow four austerities constituting of Tapsya of love, Tapsya of knowledge, Tapsya of power and Tapsya of Beauty. The myth that spirituality can be achieved by contempt of body was broken by Dr. Banerji. It is much more difficult to live soberly and without desire than to deprive the body of its indispensible nourishment and cleanliness.

Tapasya of Beauty aims at developing a body which is harmonious and balanced, so that its parts are well-coordinated. The life of the body should also be well-coordinated with the other parts of the being, such as the life-energies and the mind. Reading from the text of Mirra Alfassa, who was also known as the Mother and was Sri Aurobindo’s spiritual collaborator, Dr. Banerji pointed to the disciplines of the physical life which constitute the Tapasya of Beauty.

The Tapasya of Power pertains to the vital energies in the human being – what is known as prana in India., chi in China and was called pneuma in medieval Europe. Dr. Banerji pointed to how the vital energy can be sustained and its quality improved so that it maintains a high consciousness and creativity at all times. Part of the Tapasya of Power is also to use the senses to study the worlds of life and matter, so as to distinguish its qualities and put oneself in relation with those forces which promote consciousness and harmony.

The Tapasya of Power would lead to a spontaneous attunement with the cosmic Will at work in the universe. Similarly, the Tapasya of Knowledge consists in allowing a higher Knowledge to express itself through our speech. This austerity of speech is based on a habit of silence, so that one does not say what is useless or unnecessary. Out of this silence, much more effective action can emerge, people can understand each other better and words of wisdom can express themselves in speech.

Dr. Banerji, focused on the Tapasya of Love in the last of  the 4-part workshop series. Referring to the Mother’s text, Dr. Banerji pointed out how Love is the most powerful force in the cosmos and how it is at work in the universe to make it evolve towards unity. The austerity of Love consists in developing a primary emotional relationship with the Divine.

All other relationships should be made secondary to this relationship with the Divine, who is the friend who never fails us and is always by our side, understanding us even better than ourselves. The Tapasya of Love can bring us liberation from suffering. Dr. Banerji concluded by showing how the four austerities each brings its own liberation and prepares the human life to manifest a higher consciousness.
