Vinay Kumar, Artistic Director of Adishakti Theatre, @Auroville, joined a Communist Party theatre repertory in Kerala at the age of seven. By eleven, he says, theatre had become his textbook. It still is. @CharumathiSupr2 spoke to him about how it all began. His mother, the Malayalam writer #SarahJoseph, felt he should study theatre seriously and sent him to the School of Drama and Fine Arts, Thrissur.

Then he met Veenapani Chawla, and ignored her for three months. That changed when she asked him to fetch something from her room and he opened a cupboard stacked with western classical music. They talked for three hours that day, with very little common language between them. Together they went on to build Adishakti.

He also told Charumathi why every actor should look after plants, why sweeping and watering the land gives him more peace than hours of meditation, and why visitors backstage are surprised to find he is not as tall as he looks on stage.

"Ticket to Kerala" opens the door but doesn't go deep enough. SR Praveen's book on Malayalam cinema's 'golden age' is readable but skimmable. It maps the surface while missing the harder questions:

A great idea, underexplored. Read the full report:

Global Humanity Vs. Insanity of Perpetuated Animosities

by Dr Mahboob A Khawaja countercurrents.org/2026/10/global…

In “Global Humanity Vs. Insanity of Perpetuated Animosities,” Dr Mahboob A Khawaja examines the human consequences of war, militarism and political leadership driven by power and hostility. Focusing on Palestine, Ukraine and Yemen, he criticises the failure of world leaders and international institutions to secure peace, protect civilians and resolve conflicts through dialogue. He argues that humanity’s survival depends on moral responsibility, accountable leadership and respect for the Earth’s ecological foundations. Drawing on Immanuel Kant, religious teachings and the anti-war song “The Green Fields of France,” Khawaja calls for universal brotherhood and a rejection of perpetual conflict.

The Return of the Spirit!

by Dr Salim Nazzal countercurrents.org/2026/10/the-re…

In "The Return of the Spirit", Dr Salim Nazzal reflects on Palestine’s struggle through the idea of a shared spiritual, moral and civilizational heritage. Drawing on Tawfiq al-Hakim, he explores how collective confidence and a sense of common destiny can emerge from historical experience. He argues that Palestine’s Christian and Islamic traditions, sacred places and cultural memory belong to a wider civilizational whole, beyond sectarian divisions. The article examines how the devastation in Gaza has stirred global public opinion and connects resistance to occupation with overcoming internal fragmentation, fear and despair. Nazzal calls for political action to transform this awakening into freedom.

The Revolt of Gen G (Generation Gandhi): Destiny Dictates Their Victory

by Prof Dr P J Thomas Pathilchira countercurrents.org/2026/10/the-re…

In "The Revolt of Gen G (Generation Gandhi)", Prof. Dr P. J. Thomas Pathilchira argues that Mahatma Gandhi’s moral legacy continues to shape India’s resistance to injustice. Drawing on Gandhi’s concept of moral genius, Kierkegaard’s reflections on martyrdom and W. B. Yeats’s poetry, the author examines the emergence of young protesters who embrace non-violence despite police action, arrests and repression. Detached from established political parties and guaranteed gains, these young people practise Gandhi’s principles rather than merely invoking them. The author calls them Generation Gandhi, whose commitment to justice challenges a political culture driven by power and communalism.

Gandhiji

by David Sparenberg countercurrents.org/2026/10/gandhi…

In “Gandhiji,” David Sparenberg recounts a dream in which Mahatma Gandhi appears as a radiant presence, surrounded by a soft golden light. Without exchanging words, the two meet each other’s gaze, and Gandhi smiles. The author understands this smile as an affirmation of his choices and his commitment to democracy and nonviolence. He extends this experience to readers as a prayer, wishing that they too may dream of Gandhi and find in the encounter an affirmation of their own lives, choices and direction. The reflection connects Gandhi’s enduring moral presence with the values of democracy and nonviolence.
