Misleading Myths About Slavery

by Hugh J Curran countercurrents.org/2026/09/mislea…

Hugh J Curran examines persistent myths about slavery and the attempt to distribute responsibility for the transatlantic slave trade equally among Africans and Europeans. He distinguishes forms of servitude within Africa from the racialized, hereditary chattel slavery developed in the Americas, while acknowledging African participation in slave capture and trade. The article traces the role of European commercial interests, weapons, colonial plantation economies and racial ideology in expanding the Atlantic trade. It also considers resistance to enslavement, slavery in Muslim societies, Britain’s abolition laws, compensation to slave owners, and the growing international debate over reparations and historical responsibility.

Reading the Body, Governing the Eye: Modesty, Gaze and Scripture in the Torah, the New Testament and the Quran

by V A Mohamad Ashrof countercurrents.org/2026/09/readin…

V A Mohamad Ashrof examines modesty, visual desire and the discipline of the gaze across the Torah, the New Testament and the Quran. Drawing on research in neuroscience, physiology and eye-tracking, the article considers evidence for differences in male and female responses to visual sexual stimuli. It then examines the textual and interpretive foundations of hair-covering, head-covering and related dress practices in the three traditions. The study highlights the distinction between explicit scriptural commands and later legal or customary elaborations, while also examining the recurring injunction that men exercise restraint in their gaze. It presents the scientific and scriptural evidence cautiously, noting both convergences and significant interpretive disagreements.

The Farmer Is Not to Be Trifled With, in Reel or Real Life

by Vidyarthy Chatterjee countercurrents.org/2026/09/the-fa…

Vidyarthy Chatterjee reflects on the dignity of farmers and the ways class prejudice is expressed through dress, manners and social appearance. Beginning with recent incidents involving the lungi, he connects contemporary political behaviour with Joshy Joseph’s 2004 short film 'Safar', in which a farmer travelling to Delhi quietly unsettles the assumptions of affluent urban passengers. The film’s humour and visual storytelling expose the fragility of social hierarchies built around clothes, etiquette and notions of refinement. Chatterjee also considers Joseph’s documentary work and his own experiences of class-based judgement, before linking these reflections to the continuing struggles of farmers, workers and students.
